What we do

Group of happy participants from The Huracan Foundation's Nepal project

Our model

We give people the support to change their world, by using football as a catalyst for learning. The projects are led by teachers from the Teach For All network, who are all working in communities with great needs and challenging environments.

What we tackle

We aim to improve both the children’s attendance and performance in school, alongside tackling social issues that are specific to the local community. These have ranged from reducing gender inequality and improving opportunities for girls, to steering children away from drugs and local gangs.

Where we work

We are closely followed and supported by Los Quemeros (the fans) of C.A. Huracán in Argentina, who we are named after. Given this strong bond we initially focused our work in South America, but over time we have broadened our reach to projects in Africa, Asia and Europe - with our first UK project in 2019.

Our programmes

The Huracan Foundation acts as an accelerator for small projects run by Teach For All teachers and alumni. We provide the Project Leaders with:

How we do it

After initial selection, our Project Leaders attend a Kick Off event where they receive training and start to build a strong community with the rest of the group.

The Kick Off event includes an introduction to how The Huracan Foundation works, as well as training sessions on how to manage your project, impact measurement, budgeting, safeguarding, strategy, marketing & communication and leadership.

Once the projects are underway, our Project Leaders will be running a combination of football and non-football sessions, covering topics such as building self-esteem, leadership, empathy and team building, and will be supported by a network of mentors that includes previous Project Leaders.

Throughout the year the Leaders also have access to the Huracan Foundation’s online curriculum, The Huracan Academy, which builds on the training they receive at the Kick Off event and leads them towards building their own sustainable, self funding organisation.

Success stories

Nasly - Colombia

In 2014 we supported a project in Uruba, a very rural area severely affected by Colombia’s violent past.

At the school where the project was run, the number of teenage pregnancies amongst the girls who were part of the Huracan FC Uruba team reduced from four in the first year to zero, with no school drop-outs either.

During the period of the project, the school also appointed their first ever female school captain, Nasly, who had been a member of the football team. Not stopping there, she also went on to be the first girl from this area ever to attend university.

This follow up video, recorded five years later, demonstrates how Nasly’s life has been changed by the project, and the opportunities it opened up for her.

Mingma - Nepal

Discover Mingma's reflections on his journey as a Project Leader of Huracan FC Nepal with The Huracan Foundation.

Hear his insights into the invaluable support he received and the transformative impact he ignited within the children of his community.

Explore how his leadership role not only brought positive change to young lives but also how the experience shaped his own growth and development, making this programme a remarkable journey of mutual empowerment.

Vicent - Ghana

Hear how Vincent set up Huracan FC Ghana to inspire the children in his community to attend school regularly.

He was facing a constant struggle to keep the children away from the alternative of earning money.

Not being experienced as a football coach, Vincent was grateful of the support of The Huracan Foundation and to be able to learn from the experience of previous project leaders.

Whilst he admits it has most certainly been a challenge, he saw the rewards with some of the players receiving Man of the Match in Inter-School Competitions and one player, Solomon, has been called up to the U17 National Team. Hear Solomon’s incredible story and the impact Huracan FC Ghana has also had on his approach to education and school.

Charles - Uganda

Project Leader Charles introduces you here to his community where he is running his project Huracan FC Teso Uganda.

Hear about his strong passion to empower the young girls so that they will grow to be leaders in the community.

He is using football to help bring them confidence and independence and start to bring down levels of female school drop out rates, gender based violence and early marriages.
